Reflection:

I believe this portrait best shows my improvement as a photographer. Before taking this course, pictures that I took are more like snapshots rather than photographs, they were merely a click on the shutter. I never thought about the composition of the photograph, the lighting or any of the elements we explored in this course. Additionally, I didn't know how to use my camera other than simply snapping the shutter. By exploring the functions of my camera and learning various techniques such as the compositional techniques and the techniques for taking portrait picture, I am now able to take better and more meaning photographs. I feel that I am able to take a shot and at the same time express myself through the image. Now, whenever I am taking photos, I automatically try to apply the different techniques that I learned throughout this course, for example, for this portrait, I shot candidly and as a result it turned out to be very natural. I also played with the subject's eye contact, which again makes the photograph look more natural, The rule of thirds was also applied to this photo. The mirror behind the subject provides a reflection which adds to the fullness of the shot.

CULTURE CLASH:

LANCY_culture_clash.jpg
Simply put, culture clash is the differences in cultures about beliefs and way of life. Images of culture clash are typically juxtaposes the similarities and differences of two cultures. In my image, I used a scenery image of Bai Xin Zhuang Village as the background. The background consists of rundown houses, trees and a dirt path. I also put in an iconic building of Beijing in the background. On the dirt path, there is a Chinese garbage worker riding on her tricycle. I enlarged a western looking house and put it along the houses of Bai Xin Zhuang Village. This shows the great differences between the style and condition of the houses. I also put in a Halloween pumpkin carving on the roof of a Chinese house.
